Why Compost ?
In the year ending April 2007 Ballaneven Compost Ltd processed 2770 tonnes of green waste generated on the Isle of Man. Had this not been composted 2000 tonnes of this figure would have been incinerated. The resulting ash would then have to be transported by road and subsequently land filled adding additional cost to the incineration disposal route and increasing its carbon footprint. Compost has the benefit of improving the condition of soil by adding organic matter to its structure giving it body, assisting with drainage in clay soils and improving moisture retention in sandy soil. It also helps suppress some plant diseases.
Growing trials have demonstrated no difference between plants grown in Ballaneven peat free compost and those grown in imported commercial alternatives grown in peat compost. |
